My old friend Matt Driscoll has filed a lengthy post over at the Weekly Volcano’s “Spew” blog about the Homegrown Heroes signing at Comic Book Ink this weekend. For a bit of background, I actually gave Matt his first writing gig at the Tacoma Reporter years ago (and, if memory serves, willfully ignored the fact that at the time he needed a fake I.D. to get into bars and cover rock shows for us).

Anyone familiar with Driscoll’s work will know that the article is about four paragraphs about his personal life followed by maybe ten words on the event he’s theoretically covering (he was the same way back when he wrote for me — kids these days), but for a thrilling tale of friendship, betrayal and redemption, check out the post. It’s all true, except for the part where I was ever mad at him. And don’t forget to stop by and get a book signed at Comic Book Ink in Tacoma tomorrow from 2-5!

I’ll be signing books at Comic Book Ink in Tacoma on Saturday, June 19 from 2-5 pm as part of the Homegrown Heroes signing (directions). Also at the event will be members of the Dockyard Derby Dames, some of the folks who put together The Gamers: Dorkness Rising (which I saw on netflix recently, and which is hilarious) Heroclix sculptor Ben Misenar, Author Jack Cameron, and cartoonists Mark Monlux and James Stowe. You should come out and see us! Especially since it’s my first formal book signing, and I have every expectation of sitting alone in a corner for three hours, weeping quietly.

John Munn at Comic Book Ink has been a tremendous supporter of Zombocalypse Now, and I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to be signing at his store. I’m not just saying that, either — John was the very first retailer to stock the book, was instrumental in helping me get picked up by Alliance Games and Diamond Comics, and sold books for me at this year’s Emerald City Comic Con. Without his tireless support, there’s no chance that the book would have had a fraction of the success it’s enjoyed so far. This is also the last big event at the shop’s current location before they pack up and move to their new spot next to the Regal Cinemas right off I-5, so come celebrate with us!

The Homegrown Heroes event is a bit of a homecoming for me, since after 18 years of T-town bliss I moved northward to Seattle last year to be closer to the day job (and shack up with my sweetie). So I really hope to see some old friends there — my old Pandemonium Magazine, Tacoma Reporter and Weekly cohorts, the Ex-Kinko’s crew, etc. etc, — and hopefully some new ones as well.

Comic Book Ink. Saturday from 2-5. There will also be Roller Derby Girls. That is all.

Finally have a chance to breathe a little after our whirlwind con schedule over the past couple of weeks (well, that’s what it felt like to me, anyway), so I figured I’d take a minute and jot down my convention impressions. This might get kind of lengthy, so buckle in.

Thursday the 22nd I drove down to Portland (a city which I adore, although I didn’t get the chance to combine Red Stripe and Qbert at Ground Kontrol, which is the entire reason I usually make the trip) and split the weekend between Gamestorm and the Public Library Association Show. Both were interesting, but the culture shock of going back and forth took a little getting used to. My book was on display at the IBPA booth at the library thing, and that was mostly about meeting book folks and trying to kind of soak up the publishing industry through osmosis. I’m not sure if it’ll pay out in terms of books sold to libraries vs. cost of being there, but it was definitely worth checking out, especially since it coincided with the REAL reason for our visit.
